Emergency Response Structure

This page is to inform you about training available for NIMS/ICS. Based upon emergency management and incident response practices, NIMS/ICS represents a core set of doctrine, concepts, principles, terminology, and organizational processes that enables effective, efficient, and collaborative incident management.

The response structure that NIMS/ICS represent provide a systematic, proactive approach to guide departments and agencies at all levels (of government/nongovernmental/private sector) to work seamlessly to prevent, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the effects of incidents; regardless of cause, size, location, or complexity, in order to reduce the loss of life and property and harm to the environment.

RecommendedTraining

We recommend that all employees complete ICS 100 to gain a fundamental understanding of the organizational structure of the Incident Command System.

We highly recommend that supervisors, safety coordinators, and those involved in mission critical functions take IS-700 "NIMS An Introduction". In addition, consider the contents of the NIMS Additional Courses link as they relate to your level of responsibility.

ICS-100 - Introduction to Incident Command System, ICS-100

Course introduces the Incident Command System (ICS) and provides the foundation for higher level ICS training. This course describes the history, features and principles, and organizational structure of the Incident Command System. It also explains the relationship between ICS and the National Incident Management System (NIMS). 2-3 hours (including exams) overall length of course will vary for each individual.

IS-700 - NIMS An Introduction

NIMS Additional Courses

The National Incident Management System (NIMS) Training Program identifies those courses critical to train personnel capable of implementing all functions of emergency management. This program establishes the NIMS core curriculum to ensure it adequately trains emergency and incident response personnel to all concepts and principles of each NIMS component.

IS-363: Introduction to Emergency Management for Higher Education

The goal of this course is to provide Institutions of Higher Education with knowledge and planning strategies to protect lives, property, and the environment by supporting operations more effectively within the context of comprehensive emergency management.

NOTE: You must complete the entire course without exiting to receive credit. If you have to temporarily leave the course, do not exit or close your browser. Exiting from the course will require you to start that lesson over again.

Certificate of Completion: You will not receive a course certificate in the mail. After completing the on-line training, you will receive an email with instruction on how to access your certificate for print. Please retain this email for your records, as it is the only way to access your certificate.

Keep track of your training and (for the record) inform EH&S staff of your success!
